DHEA - The Unknown Hormone

DHEA is the primary sex hormone produced by the adrenal glands and is
sometimes called the "mother hormone" because it's a precursor to many hormones our bodies need. Pharmaceutical grades are preferable.

DHEA is produced naturally in the brain, skin, and adrenal glands. And, DHEA supplements are produced commercially from wild yams (Dioscorea); however, this process requires a laboratory and six to eight complicated chemical reactions. In other words, our bodies are not able to separate the DHEA from wild yam.

Natural DHEA production peaks in our bodies at about the age of 25, when it then begins to diminish quite rapidly until the age of about 60 when our bodies produce only about 10 percent of their previous, youthful levels.

Pregnenolone

Pregnenolone is a natural hormone that cannot be patented.

Some people find pregnenolone improves energy, vision, memory, clarity of thinking, well-being, and often sexual enjoyment or libido. Pregnenolone may be considered a good brain enhancer in those who are deficient. Studies in rodents show pregnenolone to be one of the most effective and powerful memory boosters.

Pregnenolone may increase levels of acetylcholine in the hippocampus and other memory regions in the brain. Some women report lessening of hot flashes or premenstrual symptoms.

Melatonin

Melatonin - known chemically as N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine,

Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone found in animals and in some other living organisms, including algae. Circulating levels vary in a daily cycle, and melatonin is important in the regulation of the circadian rhythms of several biological functions. Many biological effects of melatonin are produced through activation of melatonin receptors, while others are due to its role as a pervasive and powerful antioxidant with a particular role in the protection of nuclear and mitochondrial.

Estrogen

Estrogen is probably the most widely known and discussed of all hormones

The term "estrogen" actually refers to any of a group of chemically similar hormones; estrogenic hormones are sometimes mistakenly referred to as exclusively female hormones when in fact both men and women produce them. However, the role estrogen plays in men is not entirely clear. To understand the roles estrogens play in women, it is important to understand something about hormones in general. Hormones are vital chemical substances in humans and animals. Often referred to as "chemical messengers," hormones carry information and instructions from one group of cells to another. In the human body, hormones influence almost every cell, organ and function. They regulate our growth, development, metabolism, tissue function, sexual function, reproduction, the way our bodies use food, the reaction of our bodies to emergencies and even our moods.

Progesterone

Progesterone - one of the hormones in our bodies that stimulates and regulates various functions.

Progesterone plays a role in maintaining pregnancy. The hormone is produced in the ovaries, the placenta (when a woman gets pregnant) and the adrenal glands. It helps prepare your body for conception and pregnancy and regulates the monthly menstrual cycle. It also plays a role in sexual desire.

Testosterone

Testosterone - A steroid hormone produced mainly in men.

Testosterone is a steroid hormone from the androgen group. In mammals, testosterone is primarily secreted in the testes of males and in the ovaries of females, although small amounts are also secreted by the adrenal glands. It is the principal male sex hormone and an anabolic steroid.

DHEA - The Unknown Hormone

DHEA is most commonly used by individuals over 40 to help restore the natural age-related decline of this vitally important pro-hormone. It's reportedly shown to increase sexual energy in both men and women and may even help alleviate male impotence. Recently, it has been used by some younger individuals to help raise testosterone production, which may help increase strength and muscle mass. DHEA isn't for everyone, but it's probably safe to say that the older you are, the more likely your body lacks adequate amounts and the more likely for DHEA supplementation to be beneficial.

Where to find DHEA

DHEA is produced naturally in the brain, skin, and adrenal glands. And, DHEA supplements are produced commercially from wild yams (Dioscorea); however, this process requires a laboratory and six to eight complicated chemical reactions. In other words, our bodies are not able to separate the DHEA from wild yam.

Potential uses for DHEA

Research indicates that DHEA may be useful in the treatment of:

  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
  • Menopause
  • Obesity
  • Herpes
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Osteoporosis
  • Lupus
  • Arthritis

Pregenolone

Pregnenolone is a natural hormone that cannot be patented.

Pregnenolone side effects and benefits, review of dosage and research studies by Ray Sahelian, MD.- Honest Pregnenolone Information

Back in the 1940's, when researchers started experimenting with the use of pregnenolone, they realized that it could be helpful for people under stress and it could increase energy in those who were fatigued. Pregnenolone has stayed in relative obscurity since the 1940's, with only rare mentions in the medical literature. There have been few studies published on pregnenolone in recent years, and only a couple involve human subjects.

Benefits of pregnenolone

Some people find pregnenolone improves energy, vision, memory, clarity of thinking, well-being, and often sexual enjoyment or libido. Pregnenolone may be considered a good brain enhancer in those who are deficient. Studies in rodents show pregnenolone to be one of the most effective and powerful memory boosters.

Pregnenolone may increase levels of acetylcholine in the hippocampus and other memory regions in the brain. Some women report lessening of hot flashes or premenstrual symptoms.

Possible pregnenolone side effects

  • Over stimulation and insomnia -- low doses could be helpful for sleep when
    taken in the morning.
  • Irritability, anger or anxiety -- low doses could actually ease a person into
a relaxed feeling, while higher amounts may lead to irritability.
  • Acne can occur due to the probable conversion of this hormone into androgens. Headaches are possible with high dosages.
  • Possible scalp hair loss if used daily for prolonged periods.
  • Irregularities of heart rhythm, Heart Palpitations, even on as low a dose as
10 mg. This can be serious in the elderly or those with heart rhythm
    disturbances.
  • Unknown effects on the thyroid gland or other organs and tissues.
  • Using pregnenolone may elevate your DHEA and progesterone levels, and DHEA can increase estrogen and testosterone levels.

What form of pregnenolone is best?

Oral pregnenolone pills work well. Sublingual (sublingual means it melts under the tongue) is an excellent option by bypassing the initial liver metabolism that occurs after swallowing a pill.

How is pregnenolone made?

There is a type of plant called a "wild yam" that is grown in certain parts of the southern United States and in Mexico. This wild yam contains a compound called diosgenin that is the precursor to steroid hormones. In a laboratory setting, diosgenin is converted into pregnenolone. Further laboratory processing can convert pregnenolone into DHEA. The human body does not have the ability-the required enzymes-to convert diosgenin (a six ring structure) into pregnenolone (a four ring structure). Therefore, if a person swallows pills that are extracts of wild yams (diosgenin), he or she will not get pregnenolone or DHEA. The conversion of diosgenin to pregnenolone must be performed in a laboratory setting. If one wants to purchase pregnenolone or DHEA, the bottles he or she buys must have labels saying that ingredients contain actual pregnenolone or DHEA, not extracts of wild yams or diosgenin.

Can I take pregnenolone if I'm already on DHEA, estrogens, or other hormones?

Since both DHEA and pregnenolone have certain similar effects (however, they have differences, too), you should lower your dose of DHEA when you go on pregnenolone.

Progesterone - Its Uses and Effects, By Frederick R. Jelovsek MD

Progesterone is naturally secreted by the ovary in the second two weeks of the menstrual cycle in reproductive age ovulating women. Progesterone or progesterone-like substances called progestogens or progestins are also ingested by women in birth control pills, menopausal hormone replacement therapy, or just sometimes to induce a menstrual period or regulate abnormal bleeding problems if menses are skipping or bleeding is irregular or prolonged. Progesterone has been used also as therapy for Pre Minstrel Syndrome (PMS) and for women with infertility or frequent pregnancy loss.

Many magazine articles have described the benefits and hazards of estrogens in women, but progesterone effects are much less known. A recent symposium, Fraser IS, Lobo R (eds and cochairs): Update on progestogen therapy. J Reprod Med 1999;44:139-232. brought together much of the current knowledge about progesterone administration for different purposes and helps answer some questions that many women may be interested.

Progesterone has the identical chemical structure to the substance made in a woman's body by the ovarian corpus luteum (gland formed after an egg is ovulated each month). Actually the progesterone is now synthetically made but it behaves as best we know, just like the body's natural progesterone once it is absorbed into the blood stream. This is to be distinguished from synthetic progesterone-like chemicals called progestogens which bind to the body's progesterone receptors and function for the most part, just like progesterone. Because they are chemically different than natural progesterone, they sometimes have side effects or actions that are different than progesterone.
